In winter, what we choose to put on our skin is more important than ever.
As the temperatures drop and the weather slowly changes, so does our skin.
We're more prone to dryness and irritation, which means we have to give our skin some extra love during this time.
In figuring out how to keep our skin moisturised, radiant and soft during winter, there are certain practices we need to avoid. Keep reading to find out what they are!
Our Winter Skin No-Nos
Take note of our top 5 winter skin sins and avoid dry, flaky skin all winter long!
Hot Showers
Hot showers can strip away the natural oils that keep our skin moisturised and healthy.
During winter, the air is already dry, so having hot showers can exacerbate this problem, making skin even drier. It’s best to use lukewarm water when showering or bathing.
It’s also important to limit your shower time to no more than 10-15 minutes to avoid further drying out your skin.
Forgetting your SPF
Contrary to popular belief, UV rays are just as damaging in winter as they are in summer. They can penetrate the skin and cause damage, even if the weather is overcast. This is why it is still incredibly important to apply SPF everyday in winter. Multi-Defence Moisturiser SPF15 is the perfect everyday moisturiser that contains SPF15. This is for those who experience incidental sun exposure (For example, you aren't in direct sunlight but sit in an office with windows.)
Using Harsh Products
During the cooler months, you’ll want to avoid products that may contain alcohol, fragrances, or other harsh ingredients. Instead, opt for gentle, hydrating skincare products that are designed for dry or sensitive skin.
All of The Jojoba Company’s natural skincare products are suitable for sensitive skin and we don’t use synthetic fragrances, so they’re perfect to slot into any hydrating routine.
Neglecting Body Care
Yes, we understand that sometimes body care can be a pain in winter due to the cold temps (especially right after you step out of the shower), but this is no reason to neglect caring for the skin on your entire body!
When the skin on your body becomes dry, it can start to crack and peel, which can make you more vulnerable to infections and irritants. Dry skin can also become itchy and irritated, which can be uncomfortable and distracting.
Moisturising the body helps to replenish your skin's natural moisture barrier, which can help to prevent dryness and dehydration. It can also help to improve your skin's texture and appearance, leaving it looking smooth, soft, and supple.
Our tip is to mix Australian Jojoba with your favourite body lotion or cream for intense moisturisation that lasts hours!
Exfoliating Too Much
If you’re someone who likes exfoliation, you might want reassess the number of times you exfoliate in the winter months. While exfoliating is great for removing dead skin cells and promoting cell turnover, too much of it can damage your skin’s natural barrier, cause micro-tears and lead to dryness, redness and irritation.
In winter your skin is already more delicate and prone to dryness due to cold weather and low humidity levels, so over exfoliation can make this worse by stripping away the skin’s natural oils.
Our Jojoba and Enzyme Radiance Mask is an exfoliating face mask that can be used once a week to appropriately exfoliate the skin. For the body, our Jojoba Bean Natural Exfoliant can be mixed with our Australian Jojoba to create an exfoliating polish. This polish can be used to exfoliate the body weekly. Don’t forget to moisturise your skin after!
